Keep it Simple with the Ring Security System

Posted in The Profit October 2016 by Don DeRosa

“My grandmother had this high-tech security system - a rusty nail she used to lock the door.” ~ Quincy Jones

Once fall comes, we’re thinking about getting the kids back to school and falling into a familiar routine. You’re not the only one thinking about that, other people may be looking forward to quiet days in the neighborhood too. Break-ins usually happen during the day when no one is at home. If your neighbors are on the same grind as you are, you may not discover a robbery until you get home and see your door open.

These thoughts are frightening, but there are things you can do to prevent it. Wired home alarm systems are great, but if you don’t have the budget to pay a monthly service to monitor your property a one-time investment is perfect. There are wifi cameras and apps that you can use from different manufacturers, motion sensor lighting and timers for your interior lamps. But having the peace of mind that there are eyes on your house at all times and having great customer service is a winning combination.

Ring is the best system that has everything you need at your fingertips. There are a doorbell and camera set-up for your front door as well as two interior cameras. You can access the live feed from your smartphone or you can pay a service fee to record and access videos. In my experience there is no need to use the paid service, having the live feed is handy enough. I can also use the intercom system to address people at the front door. I have heard that some people can experience a 10 second delay in video but I haven’t had that problem. It is dependent on your wifi speed, so it is wise to update your internet service before install.

I have used other devices in tandem with each other, a tablet mounted in a window with a motion sensor app that pings my phone when there’s motion. But this wasn’t fool proof. I think that the Ring system solves a lot of the guesswork in setting up your own system. There is one flaw, that the camera/ door bell mounted on the side of the front door can be accessed if someone were so inclined to. In theory, one would have to unscrew it from the wall and hit the reset button on the back to have access to your wifi network. Hacking the Ring security system is kind of unheard of. Since someone would have to be standing at your door for a while as they take apart your doorbell, would probably raise some suspicion.

If you did want to spring for the monitoring service, the monthly fee is worth it if you are planning a prolonged trip away from home. But I think having this live feed monitor is worth the one time investment the Ring is worth. It is an elegant design, it blends into the facade well next to a door. I highly recommend it for those of us who want that instant feeling of accomplishment in installing a security system in one step.
